Manipal University celebrates diversity at International Evening

Manipal University celebrates diversity at International Evening August 21,2012 Manipal University showcased its international student exchange programs at an “International Evening” at Fortune Inn Valley View on August 16, 2012. It was the first time that about 125 interns from 25 countries came together to celebrate an evening of diverse cultures. It was an evening to remember. IAESTE IndiaMIT and AIESEC Manipal University, the two student exchange programs under the university, and Amchi, comprising Manipal College of Dental Sciences students, which undertook a dental healthcare project in Ladakh over 10 days in the beginning of August, along with Wisdomtooth of the US and European Dental Students Association (EDSA), jointly presented the memorable evening. Manipal University Pro Vice Chancellor Dr H Vinod Bhat informed the audience how the “International Evening” was conceived. He also gave bit of a background to IAESTE IndiaMIT, AIESEC, Amchi and the Amchi Project. Also present on the occasion were the Vice Chancellor, Dr K Ramnarayan and Registrar, Dr G.K. Prabhu. Members of the Amchi team presented the project report with the help of a video. It transported the audience to Ladakh to get a glimpse of their experiences in the land of the Dalai Lama. From meeting him to treating the patients and even giving a hands-on training to the locals, everything was well covered in the video. Thereafter, IAESTE IndiaMIT and AIESEC made their presentations to explain how they came into existence in the University and the benefits of the exchange program to the students. DR Ritesh Bhattacharjee, Project officer of Amchi gave the vote of thanks. Then came the cultural show. First was a lively dance by the students of MCODS. The interns from AIESEC sang the famous “Hum hongey kamyab”. To highlight the global impact on cultural harmony due to the exchange of students, there was a skit by members of IAESTE During the skit, there was another dance performance by “Blitzkrieg”, a group which have successfully performed in various parts of the country.  The curtains came down with a fashion show, which was brilliantly orchestrated by Burning Ice, the fashion group of MIT students. Every model displayed a different Indian traditional dress to complete the ethnicity of the evening.

“Homecoming” The Silver Jubilee Orthodontic Alumni Reunion

The Department of Orthodontics, MCODS Mangalore celebrated the silver jubilee of the post graduate program in Orthodontics at MCODS, Mangalore with an alumni reunion held on April 20, 2012 at The Goldfinch.
The gathering was welcomed by Dr Siddarth Shetty, HoD following which a video showcasing the department through the years was played.
Dr. V. Surendra Shetty Dean, MCODS Mangalore and Dr. Subraya Mogra, Professor, Department of Orthodontics, MCODS Mangalore both former HoDs were felicitated by their old students for their invaluable contributions to the department and to the specialty in particular. Both teachers addressed the gathering thereafter.
Dr Kenneth Tan announced the formation of an alumni association and other decisions taken at an alumni meeting held earlier in the day.
Alumni Dr. Kedar Varthak, Dr Gurkeerat Singh and Dr Rajaganesh Gautam reminisced on their past experiences in the department.
The program included a champagne toast to the department. Around 50 alumni attended the program some from as far as New Zealand and Canada.
The formal function was followed by a banquet and dance.

A Continuing Professional Development Program entitled “Bridging the gap between oral and systemic health” was conducted by the Department of Periodontology Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore on 14th July 2012.
Dr. Dilip G Nayak, Dean MCODS Mangalore was the chief guest for the occasion. Dr. Neetha J Shetty Associate Professor Department of Periodontology MCODS Mangalore and Dr. Mrudula, Assistant Professor Department of Medicine Kasturba Medical College Mangalore were the resource persons for the occasion and gave us an overview of the dental and physicians perspective of the oral systemic link on the same topic. This was followed by a panel discussion which was moderated by Dr. Ashita Uppoor Professor and Head Department of Periodontology MCODS Mangalore. The medical experts included Dr.Pralhad Kushtagi Professor, Department of OBGy KMC Mangalore and Dr. Nithyananda Chowta, Professor Department of Medicine KMC Mangalore. The dental experts included Dr. G Subraya Bhat, Professor and Head Department of Periodontology MCODS Manipal, Dr. Nandini Manjunath Professor and Head Department of Periodontology AJ Institute of Dental Sciences Mangalore and Dr. Deepa G Kamath Associate Professor Department of Periodontology MCODS Mangalore.Around 140 delegates, who included faculty, postgraduates and interns from MCODS Mangalore participated in the session.

DISHA: Direction In Society For Human Awareness

The essence of humanity lies not only in establishing big milestones for the nation, but also in bringing together a safe and lovable environment for the ones who are dejected of it, either as a part of their miserable faith or social obligations. This is what led to the formation of DISHA-to give a direction to humankind, to make peace with the violent world and to keep the abandoned pristine in their majesty by bringing them together under one roof. This team was founded in collaboration with students’ council and enthusiastic staff members, to extend a helping hand in the direction of the oppressed and less known sectors of our society through various events like free dental check-up camps, awareness programs, drug collection and re-distribution campaigns, clothes collection drive and lots more! The organization’s main motive is to help give people an insight into the field of dental health and social vigilance. DISHA was inaugurated for this year under the presence of Dr. Mithun Pai, the cultural coordinator and the students’ council members 2011-2012 on 24th September, 2011.

October 2nd '11

DISHA started with a small cultural program organized at an orphanage “Bhagini Samaj” near Mangala Devi. The DISHA volunteers and the student council, accompanied by the cultural coordinator went to visit the kids at around 9 a.m. A dance and song were prepared for entertainment of the kids. Later, refreshments were served to the children after which, a drawing competition was held and prizes were distributed. Dr. Mithun Pai gave a brief round-up of oral hygiene practice to the kids. A small personal kit- consisting of toothbrush, toothpaste, a small bathing soap and washing soap, was distributed to each and every child. We also contributed a sack of rice to the warden of the orphanage, as a token of gratitude. The volunteers had a jolly time with the kids and the overall experience was worthwhile!!! 

White Doves

DISHA started its next venture with a visit to the White Dove Association at Mannagudda, mangalore. The students’ council association, along with a few volunteers from each batch went to the association on 23rd October, 2011. They reached around 10:30 am to the place. The inmates of the institution greeted us with warm gestures on arrival. The students performed dance and song for the people staying there. The inmates were very co-operative and participated actively in our program by singing and dancing to the tunes of performers. Later, refreshments were served to the people staying there. Dr. Mithun Pai later handed over a few cartons containing clothes collected in “cloth-collection drive” organized by DISHA the previous week. The members of DISHA and the people of White Dove had a great time together.

1)    Me: So ma’am…how long have you been running this institution now?

Corrine: 12 years now…I was given initially just one house. But now, we have 2 offices. That is an achievement for us.

2)    Me: What does the name “white dove” signify?

Corrine: In bible, there is a mention of Noah sending a white dove out of his arc, the day flood ended; with an olive leaflet in its mouth to inspect the level of water. So, white dove denotes peace, a ray of hope. That is what we do for people here, telling them that they are being cared for.

3)    Me: What is the daily routine of the inmates out here?

Corrine: Well, the people here first attend the Morning Prayer, and then they have their breakfast. Then they attend their daily chores. In the evening, we go around the city with food packets, providing the destitute on roads with food that they cannot afford.

4)    Me: So, have you ever felt the miracle of this divine act of yours that you have performed

Corrine: I was diagnosed with terminal stage breast cancer in the year 2009.I went into coma, my liver enzymes had gone up to the level of 5100 and I was told that I wouldn’t survive for long. The arrangements for my funeral were made, and everyone was informed that I would not return to the institution. The people here started to weep and pray for me night and day. Miraculously, my liver enzyme level came down to 700 after two days and within a week, I was back. Now, I’m breathing and walking happily. What more could I ask for? (Smiles)

5)    Me: Then, you believe that prayers have the power to change someone’s life?

Corrine: I believe prayers can do a lot more than what we know. Thus, all that I want to say to the mass outside is that please do pray for these poor and helpless folks. We may be a lot less in strength compared to the actual number out there, roaming around helplessly and in a confused way as where to go. All we have in this life is our fellow folks and it is the sole duty of humanity to care for, to look after the needy. Lord will always be with them who care for men of the Lord.

Swimming

Manipal University organized Inter-Mahe swimming competition from 28th to 29th September, 2011 at Manipal. Students from colleges of both Manipal and Mangalore participated in full vigor. The competition was very close one, and students from our college made novel achievements in them by their outstanding performances. Divya Goel (batch ’010) bagged the third prize in 100m backstroke category. Also, Divya Goel (batch ‘010) , Shreyasi (Batch ‘010) , Anukriti (Batch ’07) , Mitiksha (Batch ‘011) secured the third place 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley.

Athletics

Manipal College Of Nursing (MCONS), Manipal organized an inter-mahe athletic meet at Manipal grounds. The competition was held at 15th and 16th October, 2011 and many students of our college participated in various events. Nikita Sudhir (batch ‘010) secured third place in Javelin throw. Ishita Gupta (batch ’09), Ankita Tyagi (batch’09), Malvika (batch ‘010) and Swati (batch ‘011) secured 2nd place in 4x100m relay. Also, Ishita, Ankita, Malvika and Alisha (batch ’08) secured 2nd position in 4x400m. Ishita Gupta also secured 3rd place in 400 m run.

INTER CLASS

An inter-class competition was organized by Manipal College Of Dental Science, Mangalore for its students in the month of September. Students from various classes participated in a huge number and made their mark in various events by securing various positions in them. The table tennis was organized from 8th to 9th September, 2011 in the college premises. The first and second place in girls’ match was secured by students of ‘010 and ’08 batch respectively. In the boys’ match, batch of interns and pg.’s secured the first place, followed by batch ’08 who secured the second position. Chess tournament was also organized on 10th and 11th September, 2011. Batch ’07 secured the first place and batch ’08 stood second. An inter-class carom competition was held from 20th to 21st September, 2011. The batch of ’07 bagged the first place, followed by batch ’08 who bagged the second place.

The Dental Students’ Association organized a spectacular Diwali fest in college, “SANSKRITI 2011” on 29th October, 2011. The event began at 6:30 pm, with the commencement of Laxmi Puja. The chief dignitaries present among them were Dr. V.K. Prabhu (Associate Dean, K.M.C Mangalore); Dr. V. Surendra Shetty (Dean, MCODS Mangalore), Dr. Dilip Nayak (Associate Dean, MCODS Mangalore) and Dr. Mahesh C.P (Head of the Dept. –Periodontics, National Institute of Medical Sciences, Jaipur).

The event was attended by a bevy of students and staff members. The rooftop events commenced with the lighting of lamp by the personages preset there. Dr. V.K Prabhu launched the newsletter (Monthly Candour of Dental Students) and the MCODS music club. Dr. Dilip Nayak inaugurated the DSA website “www.DSAMCODS.weebly.com” ,designed exclusively by Shobhit Agarwal (Batch ‘10). Dr. Mahesh C.P brought in the zest at the fest by conducting few interesting, mind-grueling staff v/s student games. Dr. Joannah swung the mood of the festivity even more by conducting Tambola. The music club performed an eastern and western song for the evening and were well-appreciated by the audience. The rooftop floor turned into a dance-floor when the DJ and dhol took up the charge for the rest of the evening. The show ended with a magnificent cracker show in front of MCODS building at 10:30 pm.
